FILM | TOAST

film tip | toast a story of a boys hunger

Yesterday I watched the film ‘Toast, a story of a boy’s hunger’, about the childhood of Nigel Slater (English food journalist and TV personality). Nigel grows up in Wolverhampton in the 1960’s, with his mother who can’t cook but who he adores and his chilly father. His mother dies of asthma quite early in the film and his father remarries their cleaninglady who is an amazing cook but not a very warm person. The stepmother is  played by Helena Bonham Carter and Nigel competes with her for his fathers attention using food, the whole film by.  I’m a great fan of Helena Bonham Carter and if this movie would have been about fixing cars then I still would have watched because she is in it. But this movie isn’t about fixing cars, it’s about a bittersweet story of becoming who you are and doing what you love.  Another great reason to watch this film besides Helena Bonham Carter and the story are the ‘vintage’ sceneries and costumes especially the over the top floral dresses the stephmother wears. The story is a little sad but it ends well (for some characters ;).

FILM | FLIPPED

movies | Fipped | Blogpost by Dancers Road Blog

One of my guilty pleasures during long summer holidays is closing the curtains to watch movies during the day even though it’s not raining outside. A couple of weeks ago I watched ‘Flipped’ from director Rob Reiner after the novel by Wendelin van Draanen. I’m a sucker for coming of age movies (even though I came of age a while ago ;} ) and this one goes directly on my list of favourites. Flipped is a very sweet movie about Bryce and Juli falling in love  while growing up in a neighbourhood in America during the late fifties. There are chickens, there’s a beautiful tree that needs to be protected, there are colourful family members from a grieving grandfather to a perfect housewife, there is (a little) drama, there is laughing and there are lots of vintage fifties outfits and decors to enjoy during this film. If only for the interiors and fifties costumes I would watch this movie again. If you haven’t yet you should see it because it will most likely leave you with a smile on your face (unless you’re the Grinch).

LOVE IS STRANGE (the film)

Items for the eclectic home collected by Dancers Road www.dancersroad.wordpress.com

As much as I like the over the top, fully bohemian, fully retro or fully ethnic interior I usually get even more inspired by an interior that has a mix of styles. I love it when rooms are not perfect, not tidy and filled with items that don’t match perfectly. And I love it when rooms look as if they are lived in (even thought these rooms are decors ;-]), with influences from different styles. That’s probably why I instantly fell in love with the eclectic interiors from the movie: Love is Strange.

It is a beautiful movie about Ben and George who get married at the beginning of the film, George is soon fired from his teaching post, forcing them to stay with friends separately while they sell their place and look for cheaper housing. It’s a beautiful, sad and yet funny movie and it also has great decors as you can see in these pictures! I love all the plans, books and personal objects in these interiors but above all; I love the artworks and paintings hanging around. They are so lovely and not impossible to find on flee markets and in thrift shops. I recently came across one very pretty flower painting like the one in the first picture below and it is so much fun to search for items like this! For those of you who rather shop online or don’t have the patience or the time to go thriftshopping I found some items in the style of Love is Strange on Etsy as you can see above.

The set decoration of Love is Strange was done by Kendall Anderson. Which movie interiors do you find inspiring?

Products: Vintage Oil painting with Flower from: Labelfrance. African Mask from Africadirect. Noguchi style glass table from: Beakerloo. Rattan cube table from: Mkmack. Portrait of woman from: AntiqueARTGarden. Landscape Painting from: ModernistBerlin. Two golden table lamps from: Overstock. Two blue chairs from TheGalwayGirrl.

YES THE KNOTTED SHIRT!

talented-mr-ripley_2485596b[1]

For me the knotted shirt was never out of style; I’ve always loved this look. I’m not a follower of the latest fashion but I did pick up that the knotted shirt is back this season (together with other great things from the seventies like flared jeans (YAY!). Here are some vintage ladies that knew how to wear the knot in a shirt already back in the days. Needless to say but these are from the top down: Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn Monroe, Lynda Carter, Ingrid Bergman & Elisabeth Taylor.

The film still above, in which the knotted shirt stole the show, is from; the Talented mister Ripley with Gwynedd Paltrow wearing the shirt.

HEROINES #1 LAURA DERN

I was hooked when she saved that triceratops in Jurassic Park, absolutely in love with her smile and appearance from the beginning. She must be the only woman who can wear a safari outfit with shorts that are six sizes to big and still look elegant and sexy. I mean who can pull that off? Laura Dern is one of my favorite actresses, she has something wild, yet kind and her hair always seems to blow away a little. Last week I watched the movie Wild, the leading role is played by Reese Wutherspoon who I love; she is funny and gorgeous and talented and she plays a very cool woman in this movie. However that’s not the point here. The real pleasant surprise for me was that Laura Dern appears in it. She plays the role of the mother of Reese Wutherspoon and it’s a lovely, beautiful, funny, yet sad movie and you should go see it! If only for the scene were Laura Dern is dancing in the kitchen; celebrating life.
